Most roof mounted solar on houses in Scotland counts as permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas, ground mounted arrays and wind turbines can need permission from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. We check this as part of your site visit.
You can ask SSEN for a connection quote, or run the property entirely on an off-grid system of solar, batteries and backup generation. We can help you compare the two so you choose the better value option.
Yes. Since 27 August 2026, compliant plug-in solar kits with an output of up to 800W can be plugged into a standard socket in Great Britain. Only one kit is allowed per household, it must be on the approved register, and kits with batteries are not covered. Plug-in solar only works on a property that already has a grid supply.
Solar output drops sharply in December and January, so we size battery storage and backup for winter, not just summer. On exposed sites, adding a small wind turbine can keep batteries charged when the sun is low.
